Drive Daily? How To Use Less Gas

As gas prices rise, more and more of us are looking for ways to reduce our consumption. However, at times this may be easier said than done. There may be occasions when we simply need to use our vehicles as there are no other options.

If you need to drive daily, there are still ways for you to use less guess without affecting your mileage. Here’s how:

Accelerate Carefully

We all know that the right ford explorer exhaust can help to reduce greenhouse gases. However, not everyone knows that accelerating carefully can reduce your use of gas in your fuel tank. When using the accelerator pedal, do so carefully. Taking approximately 5 seconds to accelerate can help you to be much more fuel efficient.

Try To Avoid High Speeds

One of the best ways for you to use less gas is for you to avoid high speeds. Most vehicles are fuel-efficient when they are traveling between 30 and 50 miles per hour. If you were to drive a car faster than 50 miles per hour, you are going to use even more fuel than usual.

For example, if you were to travel at 74 miles per hour, you will use 20% more fuel than you would if you drove at 62 miles per hour. Did you know that if you were to drive at 74 miles per hour instead of 62 miles per hour you would only reach your destination 2 minutes sooner?

Switch Your Engine Off When Idling

Always switch your engine off when you have been idling for more than 1 minute, apart from when you are in traffic. For every 10 minutes that your car is idling, you use approximately 1 cup of gas.

Some newer cars automatically switch the engine off when the car comes to a halt. However, most drivers on our roads don’t have a new car. Until more of us do, we will use more gas than we really need to.

Anticipate Traffic Up Ahead

When you’re out on the road try to anticipate traffic that’s up ahead of you. Make sure that you keep a good distance between the car in front of you. Look at what pedestrians and other vehicles are doing around you. Try to anticipate what they will do next. This is to ensure that you drive at a steady speed so you use less gas. In addition to using less gas, driving this way tends to be safer.

Travel As Light As Possible

One of the best ways for you to use less gas is by traveling as light as possible. Remove all heavy items from your vehicle if you’re not going to be using them. For every additional 25 kilograms that you carry you will use approximately 1% more gas. While 1% more gas may not seem to be very much, in just 10 trips you would have used 10% more gas. As the price of fuel continues to rise, that extra 10% may seem quite excessive. The lighter your car is, the less fuel you’ll need and the longer your current supply will last.

There may be times when you need to place some heavy items in your vehicle. This is ok, just be sure to drive slowly. The extra weight in your vehicle can make slowing down more difficult.

As soon as you no longer need to have those excess items in your vehicle you should remove them. Motivating yourself to remove excess items from your vehicle isn’t always easy. Just remember that you’ll use more gas if you leave them in your car. Do yourself a favor and save gas and money by removing the excess items.

Try to Avoid Using Air Conditioning

When you use air conditioning it can increase gas consumption by up to 20%. When you’re driving and you feel the need to switch your air conditioning on open your windows instead. This will help to cool your vehicle. If you find that you need to put the air conditioning on, select the re-circulate option as it will help to reduce gas consumption.

Use the above tips to help you to use less gas. You may have to change some of your habits to keep your gas consumption down. If you can avoid using your vehicle, do. Many of us use our vehicles use because they’re convenient. Now it’s time to think about your gas tank and bank balance. Keep your gas use down to a minimum so you’re less affected by the rising prices.
