5 Coolest Things About the 2020 Golf GTI
- Honoring heritage. The car that defined hot hatch has kept its sporty cues through seven generations. The 2020 model gives the biggest nod to its predecessors via red accents: in the grille—as in all but one generation—as well as interior accents and red ambient lighting. The original GTI font is used on the badges, steering wheel clip, and infotainment screens. Honeycomb accents on the exterior and interior, have remained ever-present since the Mk5, and the golf ball shifter is a throwback to the very first GTI.
- Clark Plaid. Aside from the red stripe in the grille, there’s nothing more iconic about the GTI than the plaid seats. Only available on S trims for 2020—SE and Autobahn upgrade to leather seating surfaces—Clark Plaid inserts make the Titan Black cloth seats come alive.
- DCC® adaptive damping. Autobahn models features the latest version of the DCC adaptive damping system, which manages the suspension’s rebound and compression rates individually, constantly adapting to road conditions and driver inputs to help to improve vehicle dynamics. The electronically adjustable dampers provide different ride settings in the Driving Mode Selection, putting the suspension dampers in their softest setting for a smooth highway ride and to their firmest setting in Sport for better cornering performance.
- Sport HMI. SE and Autobahn models feature a Performance Monitor in the Car settings of the MIBII infotainment system. The screen shows three dials, which can be toggled through to create your own custom display of readings such as G force, relative PSI, usage of engine power in kW, and engine oil temperature. There’s also a lap timer screen where you can select start and stop and get a readout of stats.
- 12-way power driver’s seat. Autobahn models include the most adjustable seats that Volkswagen offers, to maximize driving comfort in all driving conditions, from traffic jams to the track. The 12-way adjustable seat, including four-way power lumbar support and power height-adjustment, is only matched in the 2020 lineup by the Arteon.
