How to stay safe when riding on a motorcycle

There’s no denying it; motorbikes are cool. They are fast and loud and give you an adrenaline rush that you just can’t get with a car or truck. However, it is because of that that they can also be dangerous at times, as you are a lot more exposed than you are in a car. Here are some ways to stay safe when riding your motorbike, but do remember that if you are ever involved in an accident, you should contact a Motorcycle Accident Lawyer

Wear the right gear

Part of the culture of motorbikes is the iconic leathers, but some people decide not to ride wearing the right things and find that road rash is incredibly painful. Although it might feel far too hot to be wearing thick leather clothes and large boots, this protective gear can be the difference between walking away from an accident a little uncomfortable or being seriously hurt. Be sure that your body is entirely covered and even opt for body armor under your leather jacket to really be safe. A helmet can save your life, but it needs to be a good fit for your head, so be sure to get it checked out.

Be aware

Unfortunately, some car drivers can miss bikers in their blind spots and this can be incredibly dangerous. It’s important to never assume that you’ve been seen, and keep your wits about you at all times. Although a bike can easily weave through smaller spaces than cars, be sure to assess the risk before you do this, as other road-users might not be expecting you, and if they’re not paying attention, it could cause a real issue.

Check your bike

All vehicles should be checked regularly, especially before long journeys, to ensure that everything is working as it should. Your pre-ride checklist should include making sure that there are no leaks, and nothing is loose on the bike. Check the brakes and have a look at the brake pads to check that there is plenty of life left in them. If there is a ridge on them this means they are starting to wear out, so you need to get them fixed as soon as possible. Ensure that your tire pressure is correct and that there is plenty of tread left on them.

Be sensible

It sounds obvious but it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement and forget about the risk. All road-users need to be sure that they are aware of other people around them, and are not distracted by anything else while they’re driving. You often need to have quick reaction speeds when you’re on the road, so you need to be aware of everything around you.

So put on your leathers, turn Meat Loaf up, and get out on the open road – just make sure you’re being safe while you do it.
