Regular driver? Here’s how to reduce your carbon footprint

We all know that driving isn’t great for the environment. Vehicle exhausts release both carbon dioxide, which contributes significantly to global warming, and carbon monoxide, which threatens human health. When you drive regularly and do long distances, you might feel guilty about contributing to the deterioration of the planet.

While many of us would like to drive less, sometimes this simply isn’t possible. But don’t worry. Regular drivers can still reduce their carbon footprint with these simple steps.

Drive slower

Many people aren’t aware that the way they drive can have a harmful impact on the environment. Those who slam the brakes and accelerate quickly emit more dangerous emissions than those who drive slower and smoother. So, look after yourself and the environment by driving carefully. Speedy drivers are more likely to get into accidents, too (check out these Top NJ semi truck accident attorneys).

Change your vehicle

Some vehicles are better for the environment than others. The best way to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy a car that’s fuel efficient and emits the lowest amount of greenhouse gases possible. Research shows that electric cars are better for the environment, but they also require a change in lifestyle as you’ll need a charging point installed at home. Alternatively, these eco-friendly cars are a good place to start.

Look after your vehicle

Alongside driving, the production of new cars has a harmful impact on the environment. Automotive production leaves a giant footprint because materials such as steel, rubber, glass and plastics must be created before the vehicle can hit the road. So, by wearing your car out and buying a new one, you’re encouraging more damaging fuels into the environment. If you look after your vehicle, you’ll keep it for longer before needing a new one. Additionally, tyres that aren’t properly inflated emit more pollutants into the air. Check your tyres regularly to reduce your carbon footprint.

Renewable fuels

While you might be more aware of petrol and diesel, many people believe that renewable fuels are the future. This includes gaseous fuels, alcohols, vegetable and waste-derived oils and electricity. While these may not seem like options for your current vehicle, E85, a blend of ethanol and gasoline can be used in certain vehicles, and diesel vehicles may be able to use B5, which contains a little biodiesel.

Avoid it when possible

Ok, so your job might mean that you have to drive in the week. But what about the weekends? Reduce your carbon footprint by walking, cycling or taking public transport on your days off. Not only will the environment be happier, but you’ll benefit from the driving break and exercise.
